12 September 1880 — Botzen
Sunday. 12th September [1880]. We started at 8 ocl going round by Mr Degischer’s to see if there were any more letters. There were none so we went on to Merano– At Merano we lunched & stayed an hour & then set out for Spondinig. At Merano being Sunday there were a great many Tyrolese in their holiday costumes– The women had merely kilted skirts & white sleeves—but the men had knees & green ornamented braces & their coats over one shoulder– They wore enormous broad belts of leather worked in white—one man had 1837 in large white figures on his belt. The weather became more & more threatening & our horses got lame & hardly got along. At Schlanders we found a village fete going on & at the inn a huge table d’hôte going on. We were shown into an upper chamber where the priest & his friends were regaling– A german lady spoke to me in English & told me it was the annual fête but was indignant when I supposed that she had come on purpose to see it—as she told me she lived in the country close by– She said she was a Protestant. The village was all decorated the houses had flowers in the windows & garlands & as we left guns were firing at a little distance. We took a “renfort” to the top of the hill—then trundled down for a couple of hours arriving at Spondinig when it was quite dark. We got tolerable rooms & dinner.
