13 September 1880 — Spondinig
Monday. 13th September [1880]. We were going to get up at 6 but on waking found it was raining so we went to bed again & settled to go to Trafoi later. After 9 breakfast we saw our coachman & he informed us that one of his horses was very ill with inflammation of the lungs & he could not go on. It rained off & on all day & Henry & I could only take short walks between showers. We read & I worked & in the afternoon the weather improved. There was a clap of thunder & the wind changed to the N. & we had hopes of fine weather tomorrow. We had excellent boiled trout from the river & fared well. Walked a kilometre before dinner & then came in & sat on the balcony. After dinner we played dominoes to pass the time.
