14 September 1880 — Spondinig
Friday. 14th [September 1880]. We had to take another carriage from the master of the inn as our former man’s horse was still ill. It was most lovely weather & we were not sorry to have waited till today. We got to Trafoi abt 10 having started at ¼ 7. There we breakfasted on very indifferent soup & bouille. At Franzenshohe we stopped 1½ hour & should have breakfasted here instead of at Trafoi as we did had we known. Splendid view of the Ortlerspitz & the glaciers & peaks surrounding it. It got very cold as we mounted but there was not a cloud visible. We saw the place where de Trouville murdered his wife by dragging her down the cliff. We went up higher & higher by endless turningouts from a giddy height till we got to the top of the Stelvio Pass—& there we parted with our renfort & began to run down to Sta Maria arriving at Bormio at 5.30. Found few people there. They said most had left on Monday driven away by the weather. We dined at table d’hôte at 6 wh was very bad—not many people. Played dominoes in eveng.
