16 September 1880 — Bormio
Thursday. 16th [September 1880]. Took a carriage & started in pouring rain for Sondrio. It cleared up as we went down the valley & we were able to have the carriage opened—altho’ once or twice in the day we had to shut it for showers. We lunched at Stelvio Hotel at               —very bad & very dear. We got to Sondrio abt 5.30 just as a thunderstorm was getting up all round. At the table d’hôte besides 3 Italians there were 4 English people—a middle aged lady & 2 men & a young boy—they began to whisper together– I longed to say to Henry here are more Lord Mayors—referring to some people we had seen at Bormio whom we conjectured to be Mayors– They evidently recognized Henry & it turned out they were 2 M.P.’s by name of Laurence an Alderman & an Ex Mayor & their sister & nephew. They seemed good natured people—but had not an “H” between them & their talk was very good fun. They said they had attended the Brussels fête & had then been at Pontresina. We sat talking some time. Played dominoes a little & then I went to bed with headache.
