17 September 1880 — Sondrio
Friday. 17th September [1880]. Got up with headache but we proceeded on our journey. Left Sondrio at 8 & got to Colico abt 1. Went on board the steamer. Had luncheon. Got to Varenna at 4. We met the Laurences on board & I had a long talk with Miss L. Talked to me abt the Goschens & said she thought Mrs Goschen a very ambitious woman & he wd not have gone to Consple had it not been for her– She had been his sister’s governess. On arriving at Mme Marliani’s found a lot of letters & papers—one letter from Sir Wm Drake saying he wd be at Venice on Monday so we determined to go home then on Sunday– It rained & there was a tremendous thunderstorm just after we landed at Varenna. Played dominoes in the eveng.
