19 September 1880 — Varenna
Sunday. 19th [September 1880]. We left Varenna at 8 oclock & drove to Lecco. Went to the Croce de Malta & had luncheon wh was most frightfully dear—then we went to the station. All the town was in movement owing to a fête of the workmans mutual help association. They brought banners to be blessed wh they put in a platform erected in the square. We went to Bergamo & at Rovato changed into the Milan train & got to Venice ½ hour late so we were not at home till 8. Beautiful moonlit night– Bed early.
