25 September 1880 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 25th September [1880]. The Castellanis left Venice– Signor Botti came & begged Henry to let him renovate some of our pictures. He let him try a small portrait by the Petenkoffer system wh is simply putting a box with the fumes of alcohol over it when the varnish melts & becomes refreshened. After lunch we went to the Academy & there met Sir Wm & Miss Drake & stayed there a couple of hours & then returned here & had tea. The Drakes did not dine with us but we met them afterwards in the Piazza—we did not stay long as a fog came on & it was chilly.
