27 September 1880 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 27th September [1880]. Css Marcello had promised to come & spend the day with us from her country place at Mogliano. She arrived to breakfast at 11 bringing with her Signor Massari a Senator & old friend of Henry’s. Cortelazzo also arrived from Vicenza & breakfasted with us. At 12 Sir Wm & Miss Drake came & we set off in a large common gondola for Burano to see the lace school. We found 320 girls at work & great improvements in their work. Sir Wm examined all the process & expressed himself immensely pleased at it & at the way in wh the whole affair is managed—the order & precise account keeping &c—all due to Css Marcello excellent management. We did not get home till past 5. The Drakes, Css Marcello, Signor Massari & Cortelazzo dined with us. Mr & Miss Grenville Berkeley came to tea in the evening. Css M. & Massari returned to Mogliano by a train wh left at 11 oclock.
