28 September 1880 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 28th [September 1880]. Got up late. Henry went out in the morng to meet Sir Wm at St Marks & examine the restorations of the mosaics done by the Venice & Murano Co. They wished to examine it closely before the scaffolding was taken down. Henry was very much satisfied with the way it had been done– After lunch we went out with Sir Wm & Miss Drake to meet at Signor Seguso who promised to take us to see some fine lace on sale. He took us to a small house where was a kind of antiquary & the 3 albs were brought from the church– They were Venice point trimmings—& besides there were some damask copes & a baldachino– From here we went to another small house where we were told we shd see a fine Titian on sale. But of course it was any thing but Titian when we got there– There was a very pretty woman who showed it us & she opened a cupboard where were some odds & ends on sale of all kinds of things but nothing worth having. From here we went in the gondola to the House of the Comer family near the Ponte               – We were taken by a kind of back secret staircase to the Mezzá where the Count Comer lived & up to a fine library—next wh was a room containing a most curious collection of musical instruments spinets—pianos—organ-pianos, violins, violincellos—harps, flutes—all badly kept & some much eaten by worms. From here we went to an antiquarian opposite to see some iron birds wh were well done but evidently had been made for weathercocks– Then we went home exhausted from the running abt. The Drakes dined with us—Henry went out with them after dinner & I to bed–
