19 October 1880 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 19th [October 1880]. Got up rather late. Drakes came to lunch & before the gentlemen went out with Mr Malcolm to see a palace belonging to the                family. After lunch we all went to see the Church of the Miracoli wh is under repair by the Govt but has been left abt 15 years half done for want of funds. We went on to see the fine Altar piece of Sta Catherine’s marriage by P. Veronese. It was happily down so we cd see it well—a Frenchman was making an excellent copy of it. Then we went to the Church of the Madonna del Arta & found an absurd guide who quoted Ruskin at every turn. We found out he had been for 6 months guide to him! There is a splendid Cima in this church & the pictures abt the high altar are all Tintorettos. Ella & I came home & had some tea & the others followed later. I showed some of my lace to Sir Wm. Yesterday I had an old fan show. Mr Malcolm dined with us. When the Drakes left it was raining. It had been dull all day.
