3 November 1880 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 3rd [November 1880]. I painted all the morning. After lunch Henry & Morelli went out. We went down to the big picture of Gentil Bellini. Signor Cavenaghi & I stood on chairs & he began to try taking off the varnish to see what state it is in. It was very exciting several of the heads were entirely repainted—the restaurations taken off a good deal of injury to the original painting appeared. Mr Cavenaghi left a little bit done until Henry came in to see it as he dared not proceed without permission. They came in before dark. Had tea in my studio. It was so cold & wet we lighted stove there. Wrote till dinner time translated my Italian. Mr Malcolm dined with us. We had a fire in the evening– All went away early & Henry & I played backgammon–
