9 November 1880 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 9th [November 1880]. We were still in bed & I was dozing abt 7.15 when I was roused by a shaking of the bed. I thought some one must be under it. Henry said it must be an earthquake as the door near the bed was rattling. I suggested that the men were mending the roof but Henry said it cd only be an earthquake. All this time the bed shook. It was certainly an earthquake & Hill had also felt it. At 10 Spence came to go on with his portrait & I also painted all the morning. I got a canvass & began a copy of the Portrait of Ct Lupi by Moroni wh we have in our collection. Weather still dull & heavy as it has been for the last week. We sat upstairs in the eveng & Spence sang & then I sang & when he was gone back to his hotel Henry & I played dominoes.
