12 November 1880 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 12th [November 1880]. Spence did not come till lunch time as he wished to leave his picture today. I worked away at my copy. The Bagots called in the morning & stayed some time & we showed them the whole house. After lunch Henry & Spence went out & at 3 came back to fetch me. We had a visit from Ct Finochetti a Florentine the governor of the Royal Palace here. He was very talkative & agreeable. As soon as he was gone we went out to walk in the Piazza. Came in at 4.30. A visit from Mrs Bagot who stayed chattering an immense time & amused us very much with descriptions of Naples & Rome & Lady Paget & the Pope. She said she had asked for an audience of the Pope & had one altho’ she was a Protestant as at Rome it was the thing to do– She was full of stories against Lady Paget whom she said was very unpopular. Spence dined with us. Played in the eveng & sang to us. After he left Henry & I played dominos.
