21 November 1880 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 21st November [1880]. Went out directly after breakfast to St Marks to see the preparations for the procession to the Salute where there was the great fête. St Marks was very picturesque with men got up in white & red to carry the banners & candles– All down the centre of the church there were benches full of priests assisting at the service some kneeling some laughing some reading—some putting over their heads their short white shirts ready for the procession. Suddenly when the service was over & they seemed abt to start there came an order that it rained & there was no procession– Off went the shirts & there was a scurry out of church– The men with banners bustled any how across the square to get to the Salute. We rejoined our gondola & went back under the two temporary bridges wh had been raised over the Grand Canal. It was not actually raining but it was chilly & so we came home. I set to work to finish all the newspaper cuttings & to paste them into the book wh had accumulated for more than 2 years. I did not go out again.
