18 December 1880 — Rome
Saturday. 18th [December 1880]. Morelli came directly after breakfast & we walked to the church of Sta Maria del Popolo to see the frescos of Pinturicchio & the tombs of               . In one of the chapels there are two figures supposed to have been modeled by Rafael– The whole church was most interesting especially the choir behind the high altar where are the frescoed ceiling, the tombs & some fine painted windows by William of               . From here Henry went to the Embassy to say good bye to the Pagets & I walked back to the Piazza di Spagna with Morelli & there we parted & I went to the Hotel de Paris to call on Lady Bagot. I found her in & sat a long time with her talking over the illness of the cousin & gt friend the Dss of Westr & abt Merthyr’s connection with the family—till Lady Louisa Legge called & I went home to lunch & found Henry had returned. After luncheon we took a carriage & with Cortelazzo & Giovanni went for a drive on the Appian Way which I think is the thing that brings up ancient Rome nearest to me—we in returning went a good way round the walls wh are now no longer used as a defense. Cortelazzo’s delight & astonishment was curious to behold. We all enjoyed ourselves. Morelli dined with us at 7 & in the eveng Minghetti came in for an hour.
