19 December 1880 — Rome
Sunday. 19th December [1880]. Hill & I went to the English church outside the gate del Popolo. When I returned I found Henry going off to see the Duke of Aosta whom he had not seen since the day of his abdication & departure from Spain. He said when he returned that he found the Duke aged but as nice as ever. He sent for the children to see him & said he wanted Henry to see Le petit Espagnole the only reference he made to Spain. His children came with their cousin the P. of Naples—who was dressed as a sailor. After luncheon Mrs Bagot called & told us that news had come of the Dss of Westrs death. I wrote a line to Lady Bagot. We went up the steps of the Piazza di Spagna to the Pincio & sat down to hear the band play but most of the time there was a small rain. Morelli came abt 5 to bid us good bye as he returns to Milan tonight. Sir Henry & Miss Thompson who arrived today at the Hotel d’Europe came & dined with us & we had a pleasant eveng.
