20 December 1880 — Rome | |
Monday. 20th December [1880]. We left Rome by the 9 o’cl train & Cortelazzo also went to Naples where we arrived abt 4.30. There was a lovely sunset & Vesuvius was smoking hard as the smoke went up straight it caught the sun light & appeared to be all fire. When we got to the Hotel Nobile where the Consul had taken rooms for us it had grown darker & we saw a little fire reflected at the crater & a stream of lava—but it was nothing very remarkable. We dined in our own rooms & went early to bed. | |
