8 January 1881 — Naples
Saturday. 8th January [1881]. Hill had been up nearly all night with Giovanni & was late coming to me so I was late dressing. At 11 we went out to the Cathedral. Got there in time to see the end of a festival in a basilica leading out of it. There is a fine mosaic in a side chapel wh the Madonna in it seemed a great object of devotion. There was quantities of confessionals in the cathedral & all occupied. We saw the tombs of the Anjou Kings– From there we drove thro the old quarter of the town past splendid old palaces–now no longer inhabited by their owners to San Domenico. We got in at a side door & a picturesque old monk showed us over. There are very many old tombs– In the sacristy are velvet boxes arranged of a row in a gallery containing the remains of some of the kings & celebrated personages of Naples. From here we went home & lunched. I did not go out again having rather a headache. Henry walked out. I had a visit from Mme Scarzanella whom we had met at Cortina in the autumn. Later we had visits from Profr Errera & Dr Chiaradia. Dined at table d’hôte. Mr Morgan was there & came to take coffee in our room. I had such a headache I had to go to bed early.
