3 February 1881 — Rome
Thursday. 3rd February [1881]. I went to the Villa Campana & worked & came home to lunch at 1. Directly after dressed. Signor Bernabei came & the Mantillas & we all drove to the Palace of the Cæsars & went over it all under Bernabei’s guidance. It was a lovely day & quite hot. The Marquesa kept telling me scraps of Consple news between whiles. We went over all ruins of the Palaces & walked till past 4 & then came home. The views from the Palace were everywhere lovely & it was the finest day we have had since we were here. We were joined by Sir G. Bowen & his son in law Mr Allan Campbell who went over the ruins with us. Had a visit at 5 from Mme & Mlle Zarifi & Mme Negroponte & had more Consple news. We also got several letters from there by today’s post. We heard of the Scudamore catastrophe– Read the son had robbed the post office at Consple & the father being always drunk. He had lost his place & the family are now in greatest poverty. Spoke to Mme Zarifi abt Burano lace & she promised to order some for Mlle Theresé’s trousseau. Dined at home. Wrote & played dominos in the eveng.
