21 February 1881 — Rome
Monday. 21st February [1881]. I went after breakfast to Villa Campana by myself. Worked & sat also a little while to Mr Wood. Home to Lunch. Afterwards Profr Felice Barnabei came to call to see if we wished to go & see some ancient part of Rome. We let him off to go to the Corso to take part in the Carnival & we ourselves went to Mr Saumarez balcony in the corner of the Via Frattina. Stayed there some time & it was rather amusing seeing the people pelting with confetti. A boy in the Teano balcony opposite us waged war against me & made me his special aim. We got home for 5 and had visits from Sir James Lacaita & then Senator Marchese Torrigiani who came to beg Henry to help in getting a good man appointed as director of the Florence Gallery. We dined at home & went in the eveng to the Ball at the German Embassy at wh the King & Queen were. I waited till the last moment for a gown from the dressmaker wh did not come in time and we were afraid of being late—but we found we were in very good time. I sat talking with Mme Keffenbrink for some time till the Court arrived. The Ball room of the Palace is a very fine one with an old wooden ceiling. There was rather a crowd & at first it was very hot & it was not easy to move. Later I found Mme Cairoli & she took me with her to sit with the Ministers wives near the Ambassador’s bench. Mme Kendell saw me there and came & begged me to sit with her on the Ambr’s bench– Later on she left & Mme de Noailles came & Lady Paget– I got up to speak to some one & was just turning back to my seat when “Ouida” dashed by & slipt into it. I found myself done so I walked across the room where Stufa was standing & begged him to be so kind as to give me some tea. I then found Henry looking for me & we went home. Besides the King & Q there were two Swedish princes at the Ball– Younger sons of the King of Sweden–
