3 March 1881 — Florence | |
Thursday. 3rd March [1881]. Breakfasted alone & sat writing all the morng in the sitting room next our bedroom. Henry went out to see Sir James Hudson. Abt 11.30 Mrs Sloane came & sat with me a little while before she went to church. We lunched together at 1. At 2 we 3 drove out together to Goodbans & then to the Donatelli exhibition of modern pictures. There were 2 of Watts, his portrait of Joachim & of Panizzi & one of Gordigiani the rest were all the greatest rubbish that can be imagined. We were glad to get away & drove on to San Miniato. The old basilica is spoiled by being turned into a burying place—the whole pavement being a mass of tombs. It was very cold & after walking a little while in the cemetery we went home. At 7 we dined & Mr Smith (Turkish Consul) & Mr Spence were of the party. We went to bed at 11. | |
