13 March 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 13th [March 1881]. Dr Nevin, Hill & I went to church at the Pal: Contarini degli Scrigni. In the afternoon went out in gondola took Dr Nevin to Danielli’s to pay visit & then called on the Misses Montalba. Found only Mrs Hannover in. She begged us to go there again on Tuesday to see the girls pictures for the Academy before they were sent off. We went to call on Css Brandolin but she did not see us. Took Henry to Rawdon Brown’s & then came home & sent to fetch him later. After dinner Dr Nevin & I went to Countess Marcello’s. Henry’s cold kept him at home. There were a good many people Css Persico, Css Moncenigo of St Stae, Signor Manfrin the Prefetto, Css N. Papadopoli &c. Dr Nevin played whist– it was the first time I ever saw a Protestant clergyman play whist on a Sunday. It was past 11 when I got him to go home. Css Marcello followed us out & wanted to persuade us to stop a little longer as she said there was a report that the Emperor of Russia had been murdered & the Prefetto had sent for his telegram in order to verify the news, but no one mentioned it as it was useless to alarm Pss Dolgorouky a Russian lady living here who was in the room. I said I cd not wait & Css Marcello promised to send me a line as soon as the Prefetto had verified it.
