14 March 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 14th March [1881]. I had such a headache that I did not get up till evening. Abt 10 came a note fm Css Marcello she had written at 1 in the morng saying it was unfortunately true abt the Emperor. He had been wounded in his carriage & had died in 2 hours. It is truly too horrible to think of & the Nihilists have succeeded at last. Apart from the horror at such a deed one cannot but feel that the Emperor has forfeited one’s sympathy by his conduct to his late wife & abt his marriage with Pss Dolgorouky—& also the fearful state of the country—& the treatment of the Poles & the exiling of so many to Siberia. Henry took out Dr Nevin. I got up to dinner.
