15 March 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 15th [March 1881]. Better & up to breakfast. Painted & finished and signed my picture of Turkish girl with coffee tray. Dr Nevin left us for Ravenna abt 1 o’cl. Henry & I went to Miss Montalbas to see her Academy picture. It is the facade of St Marks done with the afterglow of sunset—& a very high tide wh has filled the square with water. In the midst a group of pigeons are scrambling together– The picture strikes us as weak—& meaningless– Miss Clara M. who is so clever at water colour is wanting in strength in oils– Her sister’s picture was away being photod but I saw it on Sunday. It is a fisher boy with very unnaturally brown complexion. We went on to the gardens to take a walk– The cavalry was riding round & round exercising & amongst the officers were some marine officers who rode as sailors generally do!
