17 March 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 17th [March 1881]. I was just dressed & arranged with Hill abt what hats should be packed. She took out one & in so doing dragged out the precious bowl of rare green jade wh the Sultan had given us & it was dashed to the ground. We were all terribly upset & Hill went off in tears. At 11 Henry went out & I went out with Css Marcello to look for some more lace for Theodora. We went to Jesurum’s & Pompia but cd find nothing. Went home with her & saw the lace she is sending to the Milan Exhibition then home. After lunch went in gondola with Henry to Stabilimento to say goodbye & to Guggenheim’s to see a picture he wants Mr Burton to buy for the Nat. Gallery. A Montagnana—large altar piece. Saw his own appartments and seemed very vulgar & pretentious. Saw his wife, a nice quiet little German– Went to Rawdon Brown’s & had tea with him– Home at 5.30. M. & Mme Castellani called to take leave.
