21 March 1881 — Paris
Monday. 21st [March 1881]. Went to Hotel St Romain had some tea & went to bed till 10. Got up & Henry went to Hotel des Deux Mondes to see the Rates & on to the Embassy to call on Lord Lyons. Very soon Alice Rate & Francie came to see me & we agreed to meet in the afternoon. Henry returned to lunch at 12—& after I went to DuCroquets where I met Alice and we remained a long time trying on & settling garments. We went to a bonnet shop & then returned to our hotels. The 3 Rates came & dined with us & afterwards Henry, Mr Rate, Alice & I went to the “Français” to see the “Princess of Baghdad” a very stupid impossible piece by Dumas wh was only saved by the good acting of Mlle Croisette. The men all acted abominably. Francie Rate stayed with Hill who took her for a walk in the Palais Royal.
