5 April 1881 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 5th April [1881]. Blanche sent her brougham to fetch me & we went out together—drove to the Army & Navy stores in Victoria St & we bought flowers in pots when I came in to luncheon at 1. Henry went to the Levee; the P. of Wales having returned yesterday from Russia where he went for the Czar’s funeral. When he returned we went out in the carriage together & then he went to the Club & I went to 9 Up. Belgrave St to see Mrs Tennyson. Found her at home, met Lady Airlie at the door going in also but she stayed a very short time. Mrs Tennyson recd me with open arms & got up off her sofa to embrace me– Later Hallam & Tennyson himself came in. I had to tell him I was “Enid” as he is so near sighted– He was in very good humour & had just returned from giving Millais a sitting for his portrait wh he said he had long promised to have done. Tennyson said he told Millais that the picture wd cost him (T.) 20 guineas as he wd have to take in his London house for another week & Millais said “only let me pay the 20 guineas I will gladly do so.” Tennyson added “that would have been a splendid handle to hang a fine story on against me!” We dined with the Thomson Hankeys & met Lord & Lady O’Hagan, Mrs & Miss Goschen, Mr & Ly Constance Thane Lefevre, Miss Lefevre, Lord Moncrieff. Mr Lefevre took me to dinner– Much talk abt Ld Beaconsfield’s illness. Today the reports are bad. We went on to Gladstone’s where we met the Tennysons—Lionel & his wife & Hallam & his father, Bright, D. of Argyll, several diplomats & I got introduced to Lady Spencer—who still looks very handsome. On the whole it was a dull party.
