18 April 1881 — Inwood, Henstridge, Somerset
Monday. 18th April [1881]. I bethought me of talking to Webblin abt Arthur & his forlorn state knowing what a friend of Arthur’s he had been. He promised to try & see him but said that A. had rather avoided him since his troubles had begun– Webblin left in the morng & Merthyr went out hunting. We went off by a 12 train to Blandford, Henry, Theo & I to see the Luffs. Luff met us at the station & we walked to the Old House wh was close by—found Mrs Luff and the eldest son who is a lad at College & is going in for the law– The Old House was built by a Dutchman in the last centy & had a gabled roof and all the rooms are lined with oak– Luff has made it very pretty inside with his good old things. The house actually belongs to Merthyr who has lately bought it. We lunched & then had some talk with Luff—returned to Inwood by 4 o’clock. Lord Howth arrived to dine & sleep at Inwood. Major & Mrs MacAdam came over from Sherborne to dine. I had such a headache that soon after dinner began I had to leave the table and go to bed. The cold E. Winds returned today.
