23 April 1881 — Holdenby
Saturday. 23rd [April 1881]. Kate & I drove in the tea cart to Althorp. Cecil & Henry walked there across the fields. When we got there we were not let in as Lord Charles Bruce is laid up with a slight attack of small pox and the Dr had given orders that the house should not be shown for fear of infection so we had to drive away. We went to Brington church to see the ancient Spencer tombs which are most interesting and most wonderfully well preserved all the recumbent figures being perfect. Cecil also pointed out to us the original burying place of the Washington family in the chancel wh is marked by a stone engraved. Kitty then drove us all home to luncheon. In the afternoon we played lawn tennis. Henry & Nellie played Cecil & me. In the eveng we had a concert. Eda played the violin to Monty’s accompaniment & then Monty sang.
