24 April 1881 — Holdenby
Sunday. 24th April [1881]. We all went to morning church. Monty played the organ & the Kyrie which was sung was of his own composition. Cecil preached extempore a very bad sermon– Gussie read the lessons & stammered dreadfully. After lunch I went to church with Kitty. Monty played the organ & an anthem of his was sung. Mrs Craven came over to church & sat in the same seat with me. Cecil preached a good written sermon. After service Kate introduced me to Lady Clifden & she took me into her house. When last I was at Holdenby abt 14 years ago it was only a farmhouse—a very small portion of the original house wh was destroyed by the Royalists in time of Charles I. There is one good drawing room but the house is very small. Cecil & Henry joined us later & Lady Clifden gave us tea & showed us the pictures & had down her little girl a pretty fair child of 4. We then walked home– Played with the children– After dinner Monty played the piano.
