25 April 1881 — Holdenby
Monday. 25th [April 1881]. Cecil took Monty back to school so I did not see him. Henry & I drove in a fly to Northampton & took the train to Peterboro to pay Aunt Mary a visit. Finding no carriage to meet us we got into a fly & were just driving off when the Orton carriage came & we got into it. At Mary was in the garden & showed us her spring garden which was lovely with every kind of spring flower. We then went in to lunch. Lord & Ly Granville Gordon & Nellie & Ethel Gordon was the party besides the Granvilles’ little girl of abt 2. After lunch Aunt Mary took us for a walk to see the Wellingtonia anemone which is getting very fine. We came in & she took us up to her room to see her collection of dried plants. The girls took us to the stables to see their dogs & horses– There was one pony to be admired wh the girls had bought out of a herd & wh was a great success. Then the collie dogs were made to jump wh they did in a wonderful manner & to get into a large flower pot for wh they were too large. At 5 she took us down to Peterboro station & we returned to London by 8.30. Found Monty, Arthur & Luff waiting dinner for us. We had a pleasant eveng.
