26 April 1881 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 26th April [1881]. Luff came in the morning. Monty went off to Lord Beaconsfield’s funeral. I went to see Blanche going there in a cab as there was a tremendous shower. I stayed a short time & then walked home to lunch. There was a loud clap of thunder & then it cleared. Arthur & Rhuvon & Mildred came to lunch. Hearing that Mrs Hill Mrs Austen’s maid was dead Henry & I drove off to Mrs Austen’s & paid her a visit. We found her in her room as before. She knew & felt Mrs Hill’s death but childlike seemed to forget it. Mrs Harris was with her & seemed nice with her. Mrs Austen seemed to know it perfectly & begged Henry to go into the dining room as he went out to see Mrs Hill’s coffin. We returned home & I took Mildred & Rhuvon out with me to pay visits. I called on Sir C. & Lady Layard & found them at home. Home to tea at 5. Visit from Sir Wm & Ella Drake & from Mrs Burr. Blanche & Edward, Charlie Eliot & Monty dined with us. The two latter had been at Ld Beaconsfield’s funeral– They said there were fewer people in the church than had been expected—& there was a good deal of disappointment at Gladstone’s absence. The coffin was quite covered with flowers– Monty said that to everyone’s surprise Lord Hy Lennox was in paroxysms of tears & threw himself on a bench sobbing. Sir A. Paget has come over to England.
