4 May 1881 — 3 Savile Row | |
Wednesday. 4th May [1881]. Kembles came to see me & sat chatting till ¼ to 1 when I went off to Buckingham Palace to see Lady Ely who is now in town with the Queen– However when I got there I found she was engaged with the Queen so I could not see her & I returned to lunch. Maria lunched with me. Henry had gone into the city to try & find out about our plate wh was deposited at Messrs Willis & Percivals when we went to Madrid in ’69. When the bank failed we were under the impression that all our boxes had been transferred to Glyn’s but it seems that there was one short & that someone has changed the number in the bankers books– I took Maria out shopping & returned home at 5. Lady Hammond called & was very eloquent on the subject of Henry’s disappointment at not going to Rome & was furious with Ld Granville “Pussy” as she called him. Mrs Burr & Arthur dined with us. I had such a headache I could hardly sit at table—but got better later– | |
