5 May 1881 — 3 Savile Row | |
Thursday. 5th [May 1881]. I went out in the morng to try & see Lady Ely but again without success. I went a moment to Alice Rate who was preparing to go to the Drawing Room—then on to Blanche & took her out shopping with me & we returned to our homes for lunch. Mme Sanchez Ocaña called & then I went out driving with Blanche & she took me to the House of Commons to hear the Debate. We went there abt 5—& remained till dinner. Got some tea there. Billy Dyke & Monty paid us visits. We heard a great many questions & then the Discussion on the note of thanks to Sir F. Roberts. Lord Hartington’s speech was dull & so was Sir Stafford Northcotes who kept saying that the thanks were due to those who so nobly laid down their lives on the field of battle—forgetting they were past any human thanks! Sir Wilfred Lawson made a speech wh made the House laugh but wh seemed to me silly & illogical. We had to leave before the Debate was over & had only just time to dress & go off to dine with Blanche. Met there Mr & Mrs & Miss Francie Rate & Mr Rollo. | |
