8 May 1881 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 8th May [1881]. Monty & I went to St Anne’s church where there was a very good choral service & is therefore full of fashionable people. Saw there the Dss of Mecklenburg Strelitz & the D. of Cambridge. Walked home and lunched with Henry. He went at 3 to a meeting at the National Gallery– I went in the carriage to call on Lady Somers who was not well eno’ to see me—then to Blanche’s & to Susan Hambro whom I found also going out in an open carriage on acct of the lovely weather. I took Blanche to Dean St to visit some poor woman & then went to fetch Henry at the National Gallery & we went to the Zoological Gardens together & walked about some time seeing the wild beasts. The only person we saw that we knew there was Sir Julian Pauncefote with his child. We returned home abt 6. Henry & I dined alone & went to bed early. We had a long talk over things & Henry said he was convinced that in spite of everything he should end by going Ambr to Rome– I begged him to lose no more time but to set to work to write something. He said he meant to write his Memoirs but that he would first write an article for the Quarterly on Molmenti’s Venice wh I urged him to do at once.
