9 May 1881 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 9th May [1881]. At 11 oclock I went off in the brougham to Blanche & fetched her to go shopping with me. We went to the stores & bought our dessert for dinner tonight & returned home to lunch. After lunch Alice arrived from Stutton where she had been staying with the Ponsonbys. I got her some food & then took her to Ritchie’s to choose a hat. Went on to call at Langham House & found the mother at home & the 2 Miss Monks calling on her. They told us how much they had enjoyed their journey to Syria & Egypt after they left us at Therapia & since that they had made a trip into Spain. I left Alice the carriage & went to Blanche’s & she took me out in her brougham & then we came back here to tea at 5. Nety & Victor Montagu came to tea & Monty later. We had a dinner party of 10 & Frenchman to cook. We had Lord & Lady Stanhope, Lady Tavistock, Lord Somers, Mr Story Maskelyne, Dean Stanley & Mr Russell Lowell the American Minister & Monty– We were a merry little party & they stayed chatting till after 11.
