17 May 1881 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 17th [May 1881]. I got a letter from Maria asking me to go & see her at Roehampton so I went off at 11 in the brougham & lunched with her. Dr Howell happened to call & I consulted him about my cold. I heard from Maria all abt the sad death of Lady Du Cane who died after 4 days illness while nursing her sick boy at Ipswich. It appears he does not know of his mother’s death & fancies she had to go back to the other children. At 2.40 I set off to drive home & got there abt 3.30. At 4 I walked to Fischer’s Hotel in Clifford Street to see Lady Ely who had written to beg me to visit her. Lady John Manners called on her at the same time but happily did not stay long; as soon as she had left Lady Ely began to ask me the story of Henry, Paget & Rome– She said that she knew the Queen was very displeased with the Pagets for insisting in monopolising the post of Rome & she said she could not hear of such a thing. Lady Ely said she believed it would all come right for us in the end—& she thinks it will end in the Pagets being moved to Madrid where Sir A. Paget seems to say he would not mind going—but I suppose in that case it would have to be made an Embassy– I told Lady Ely how badly the Pagets had & were behaving to us going about abusing us right & left. Lady Ely said that altho’ she had known & liked lady P. since she was a child she knew how unpopular she was & that one of our Queen’s sons had told Lady E. that he thought her odious & that she had even been rude to his sister the Crown Pss of Germany when she was in Rome a year ago. Lady Ely was very kind & seemed very well enclined towards us & promised to write to me as soon as she knew anything– Princess Hatzfeldt coming in to call I took my departure– When I got home to tea I found Mr Leveson Gower calling & later Mrs Hobart Hampden came having lately arrived from Consple. Mr Burton (Nat. Galy) also came & then Sir Wm & Lady Gregory who sat chatting some time. We dined at the Lord Justice & Lady Bretts & met Ld & Ly Derby, Mr & Lady M. Egerton, Sir D. & Lady Majoribanks & Mr Graham Vivian who took me to dinner. It was not a very lively entertainment. After dinner I sat & talked to Sir D. Majoribanks till it was time to go– There was an eveng party & we left the housefull of people.
