18 May 1881 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 18th May [1881]. I went out in the morning in the brougham to see Susan Hambro & then sent it back for Henry to drive to the city. After sitting a little while with Susan I went to Blanche & stayed with her talking & singing & lunching &c till 3 oclock when I went to see Mama– Met Arthur there & he took me home in a hansom. We could not walk as it rained. Eda Alderson came to tea– Mamma came to fetch her home. We dined at Mr & Mrs Ball at 10 Southwell Gardens & met Lord & Lady Monteagle, Mr C. Newton who took me to dinner & a Mr Paul Friedman, who sat on my right. He is a peculiar looking man with a mop of light hair almost concealing his face & from under which an enormous nose protrudes– He speaks excellent English & told me he had lived 3 years at Simancas studying in the archives– After dinner a Mrs Mansel & her daughter came in. She was a great chatterer & very decolleté– It was quite a relief to get away from the sound of her tongue– She is the wife of a Consul Genl. in Austria I think.
