20 May 1881 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 20th May [1881]. Henry & I went to lunch with the Gregorys & met there Lord & Lady Oranmore & daughter, Miss Gough, Sir G. & Lady Bowen & several others– We did not lunch till after 2 then had quite a banquet. When we came up to the drawing room I sat by Ly Gregory & asked her how she felt—she electrified me by saying she could not sit there much longer as her confinement had already begun & her Dr had told her she could sit thro’ luncheon. I immediately rose & left the house & hinted to the others to do the same. I took Henry to the F.O. & then went & left cards & returned home to T. We dined with the Reeves in Rutland Gate & met M. & Mme Blumenthal, Dean Stanley & an American lady whose name I did not catch—said to be aunt to the wife of the D. d’Aumale’s secy. The Dean took me to dinner & was very nice & entertaining & we talked about ghosts & he recited the story of the ghost of Ticonderoga wh he said he has published. I took Henry home & went to Mrs Gerard Leigh’s Concert in Grov. Sqr where I met Blanche & we sat together. The music was not very good & there were not many people. Sent to enquire for Ly Gregory & she had a son born at 9 this evening.
