31 May 1881 — Aldermaston Court, Aldermaston, Berkshire
Tuesday. 31st May [1881]. I went after breakfast to the Grove & finished my sketch & then had to prepare to leave Aldermaston at 11.30 & we returned by a train starting at 12.6 & reaching London 1.50. It was a very hot journey. We got home for luncheon at 2. Henry remained quietly at home. I went out driving & made calls returning to tea. Henry dined at home alone. I went to dine with M. & Mme Blumenthal at 15 Hyde Park Gate. I had a very dull dinner & met no one I knew excepting Nety Montagu. I was taken to dinner by a Mr Sturgess, a rich young American—& had Sir Henry Barron on my right. Next Mr Sturgess sat a stout lady Mrs Elliot who was full of having been up all the previous night looking for her parrot who was flown away into a tree & she gave us the full particulars. After dinner there was a “tail” & there was to be music but I left early. I never saw such a curious collection of hideous esthetic & musical ladies. The only one I knew being Mr Underdown. As I went for my cloak Lady Strangford came in & I passed her by but having to wait a moment for my carriage she passed me again to go upstairs and she insisted upon speaking to me– I said as little as I possibly could as I do not care to be friends with a woman who after all Henry’s kindness had been so busy going about abusing us.
