8 June 1881 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 8th June [1881]. Dr Burton came to see Henry before 11 & agreed to Sir Wm Gull’s prescription. Felicia also called about the same time & she took me out in her brougham first to Blanche’s & then to Céciles to see abt ordering my dress & then brought me home. Mildred Guest came to lunch & also Mrs Jones & her daughter Louie. We expected Mrs Rassam but she did not come. Mrs Jones is an Arab & still very handsome in her widow’s dress. Henry had known her husband Capt. Jones out at Mosul when he was digging up Nineveh. She was very pleasant & talked her broken English very prettily. She asked if Mr Rassam was the “man of the antics” meaning antiques. She went away abt 3 & then Mildred & I went off to the old English Fancie Fayre at Albert Hall where Blanche & Connie have a stall. It was a very cold day with a piercing wind & we had to stand a long time at the door wh was closed on account of their being already such a crowd inside. I found it so dreadfully cold that after standing for about ½ hour Mildred & I went away. I went to see Lady Gregory & sat with her about ½ hour & then we drove back to the Albert Hall & stood waiting for admittance another ½ hour. Luckily I met there Carrie Somes & Ola Du Cane & Carrie put half her shawl round me. At last, when we were nearly going to give up in despair a policeman advised us to go up into gallery for 2/ & to pay the extra 8/ to come down the lift wh we decided on doing & got in without further trouble. We soon found Blanche’s stall & she took me to the refreshment stall & I got some coffee. I left Mildred with her cousins & Carrie & I got away & came home very exhausted. We dined with the Wimbornes & only met Mr & Mrs Clark & came home early.
