14 June 1881 — Oatland Lodge, Weybridge, Surrey
Tuesday. 14th June [1881]. About 11 oclock we set off in Sir Wm’s carriage & drove to Ascot. It was a fine day & we had a long but beautiful drive across the country. Sir Wm has a box where we went & sat to see some of the races. We went to the Royal Enclosure where we met Blanche & Connie & heaps of friends—but on the whole I did not find it very amusing. Sir Wm’s carriage was placed in an enclosure & we went & sat in it & eat the luncheon prepared for us sandwiches &c. Afterwards we returned to the box to see some more races. Abt 4 we set off home. As we passed the gates leading to the course we saw the Royal party coming down in semi state in procession & stopped to see it– As they passed us the Prince said Oh there’s Sir H. Layard. We got home tired & ready for dinner. Sat in the porch in eveng.
