15 June 1881 — Oatland Lodge, Weybridge, Surrey
Wednesday. 15th June [1881]. We did not care to go to Ascot. Walked in the gardens, saw the Grotto and the tombs of the dogs & monkeys of the Dss of Cumberland. Sir Wm told us that a year or two before the Queen had driven to Oatlands & asked permission to see the tombs of her aunt’s dogs & that when she left she gave a message to the gardener to say she did not think the tombs very well kept up & begged that Sir Wm wd have them seen to. After luncheon Ella drove me out & we went over to the Bircham’s & I found Mrs B at home sitting out on the lawn. We paid her a visit & then drove round home by another road. Mr Rate arrived at Oatlands & dined & slept leaving early the next morning.
