23 June 1881 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 23rd June [1881]. I walked out in the morning to do some shopping. Got some French novels to read on the journey– Poor old Sir Fenwick Williams came to call expecting to meet Mrs de Winton. He was very shaky & somewhat confused at times & Mrs de Winton did not turn up. We kept him to lunch. Maria & Alice also came to luncheon. Henry & I, Hill & the man servant Herbert started off after lunch for King’s Cross to go to Norway. Monty & Genl. Bernard Hankey met us at the Station & we left for Hull at 3.15. We reached Hull at 8.25—& went to the station hotel & got some dinner & sent the servants on board– After dinner the interpreter Siemonsen walked with Henry & me to the docks & we embarked on S.S. “Tasso.” We found we had a pretty good cabin with 4 berths & installed ourselves & went to bed– We had the end cabin with a little window looking aft from wh we could get air as we could generally have it open–
