29 June 1881 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Wednesday. 29th June [1881]. We breakfasted at 9.30 and then all wrote letters for the post. When I had done writing I sauntered up in the wood & listened to the birds & got flowers. Then I returned & fetched Henry & took him up to see the woods & we saw the steamer leaving with our post wh goes twice a week. Monty was down by the river fishing so we went down to see him but nothing was caught. We returned & lunched. In the afternoon I drove Henry in the carriole to Süra & Monty walked. By our going slowly & his taking short cuts we got there about the same time. I stopped to get some lily roots & filled the carriole with them. We found Herr Sura waiting for us & then he opened the door & we went in & examined the things. There was one very large sitting room with varnished floor & painted walls but the rest of the house was not half so good as Syltebo. We began to examine the boxes when Monty found he had forgotten the keys so we had to send Siemonsen back in the carriole to fetch them. He was not long doing this & then we opened the boxes & gave Henry out a book to read & he sat on a stone outside & perused Lady Di Beauclerk’s book on Norway while Monty & I arranged for the carrying off of the things on 2 carts—some boxes were very heavy & the stairs being very steep they had to be let down by cords & so took some time– At last we saw things getting on & so we set off home leaving Herr Süra very disconsolate at the clearing of the house. We got home at 6.30 & as soon as the boxes arrived got them brought in & Hill & I began to unpack them in Henry’s dressing room. I forgot to say how we were all disposed of. On the ground floor are 4 rooms & a hall divided in 2—in the right my bed room, in the left the dining room. At the back of my bed room Henry’s dressing room– At the back of dining room the kitchen. Upstairs Monty lives over my room– Hill over the hall & the Genl. over the dining room– There are 2 slips of room at the back for the servants. I played cribbage in the evening with the Genl.
