2 July 1881 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Saturday. 2nd [July 1881]. Monty & I both were late this morning thereby making Henry & the poor General wait till 10 for their breakfast. Henry went out after breakfast to fish in the near pools & caught nothing. Monty & I worked at home. He got the flyshaft put up & I collected some children & made them help me to hoe up some of the path in front of the steps ready to be shingled. Then Monty went off for an hour to fish in the Pool & Henry & I lunched alone at 2—we had just finished when we saw the Genl. returning from his expedition with the first salmon of the season which weighed lbs. Monty returned without any thing & they both lunched– At 3 Monty & Henry went up above the bridge to fish & I went sea fishing with the Genl. We had to row round to the village to fetch a larger boat & then we set to work. I caught only one whiting & the Genl. got 7– Before going home we said we would try for a cod—& so rowed round to the pool where they abound. I soon caught one large one of 9 lbs & lost another—then I foul hooked a whiting & we went home. Monty & Henry arrived at the same moment with a splendid salmon of Monty’s catching weighing 22 lbs We dined off salmon & mutton this eveng & then went down to the shore with the fishermen & their horse & carts to get shingles for our path. When that was done Monty gave them some spirits all round & I went & played cribbage with Henry till bed time. I left Monty & the Genl. pruning a tree in front of the house when I retired having done a good day’s work.
