4 July 1881 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Monday. 4th [July 1881]. The Genl. & the village children & I had a heavy mornings work gardening after our 10 o’clock breakfast. I also amused myself watching Hill make pies for their dinner & an open tart for our dinner. We dined at 5. Afterwards Monty & Henry went up to the Bjornes to fish down but only brought in a trout of Henry’s fishing. I & Hill went out sea fishing. I caught one small cod & foul hooked 2 whitings. The boy who went with me caught 2 more whiting & a gurnet. I never left off trying for cod the whole time & was disgusted with my want of success. When I returned at 9.30 I found Monty on the riverbank watching Henry fish the Frieswold pool but he caught nothing & we all 3 walked home together & had some tea & cold supper & went to bed. The Genl. came home with empty hands. It had been a bad days fishing for all– The weather was showery & muggy.
