6 July 1881 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Wednesday. 6th [July 1881]. It was such a lovely day when we got up that we decided on going to the Lake & at 11 after breakfast we started. John & the boy walked on. I drove one carriole with Henry behind—& the Genl. drove the other, with Monty behind and a small boy to look after the horses. We had a lovely drive & it was not too hot. When we got to [illegible word] we hired two boats & went for a row. The General went with me & John & Monty & Henry went in another boat. He set our lines with spoon baits &c and trawled but caught nothing. The lake is long & narrow winding in between high rocks coming sheer down to the water. At one place we found a landing place & landed in the shade & sat & rested & eat biscuits & cake. We hunted for ferns and saxifrage & dug up some roots to take home to our rockery. Then Monty helped me to climb up close to the snow & we sat & talked there till 3.15 when we set off home but caught never a fish. On landing we got our carrioles & while they were putting in the things I picked a large handfull of orchids. We got home by 5.15 & dined. Afterwards I gardened a bit & then went down to the river bank & sat by Monty while he fished & then watched Henry in the boat but neither of them caught anything. Played cribbage with Henry. Supped & went to bed– The Genl. came in soon after & I heard him say he had lost 2 fish & killed a trout. The post came in, we got no letters. Siemonsen came & announced that “a female cook & 6 lobsters had arrived from Molde.”
