7 July 1881 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Thursday. 7th July [1881]. It was a fine morng & after 10 o’cl breakfast I took my easel & palette and went down to the river’s edge and sketched the valley with the house included & finished it just about dinner time (4). After dinner I tidied up the garden & then took a book and stool & sat by the river while Monty fished on the bank. He got nothing & so put his rod under a tree & we went out sea fishing taking Herbert with us. We went in search of cod but only succeeded in getting a few whiting. We landed at Noste and Monty & I walked up to the bank of the river opposite the house. Crossing a damp field we came on a lot of butterfly orchids. When we got to the river we were fortunate eno’ to find the Genl. fishing there & he got out of the boat & waited while we were taken across. We had cold supper. I & Henry played cribbage & I won & had wonderful cards.
