8 July 1881 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Friday. 8th July [1881]. We breakfasted at 10 & then Henry & I set to work to revise my translation of the Italian Lace book while Monty sat writing his account of this place. Had cake &c at 2—& then I had to lie down & rest as I knocked my head. We dined at 5 then Henry went up to Cheese pool to fish. The Genl. went to Bjornes. Hill drove in the cariole to the Lake. Monty remained at home & put up all the tents he had (3). I went out seafishing with old John Ericson and caught some whiting & while fishing for them to my surprise I caught a large sythe– I began to fish again for whiting when I suddenly felt a great tug & I called to Ericson to help me & gave him over my line. He suddenly got very excited & called to me to keep still while he hauled into the boat the most horrid looking monster I had ever beheld. It was stone grey with an enormous head & wrinkled skin—a huge mouth with a fearful set of teeth– The old man at once stuffed a large bit of wood into his horrid mouth & then set upon him with another bit of wood on the head to try & kill him. The beast died hard & it was some time before he managed to get the hook out of his mouth. I was so disgusted with the hideous beast that I was glad not to see him & to turn my back & go on fishing for whiting. Soon after getting a few more whiting we returned home. As I was coming up from the shore I met Thorwald who came on purpose to tell me that Henry had come in having caught 2 salmon—so I hurried on home & met Monty coming in from the bank fishless. We found Henry standing by his two salmon one of 18 lbs the other 14 lbs & then when my fish arrived there was great amusement over my monster which turned out to be a Sea Wolf weighing 12 lbs—the Sythe weighed 10 lbs. I had a headache & went to bed when the other 2 sat down to supper– When the Genl. came in after 12 he also brought 2 salmon of 16 lbs & 12 lbs & so every one was pleased with the day’s sport– Monty was delighted at the result.
